Simple Ways to Make Summer Memories in Omaha!

by Amber Tkaczuk

Summer always seems to fly by, doesn’t it? One minute the kids are finishing their last day of school, and the next you’re buying school supplies all over again. That’s why I love finding simple ways to slow down and enjoy the little moments together during summer break.

The good news? You do not have to spend a fortune or plan elaborate vacations to create meaningful memories. Some of the best summer moments happen right at home or during simple adventures around Omaha.

End of School Year Fun at Home 🏡

With the school year coming to an end, this is such a fun time to create a few simple memories at home.

A few easy ideas:

  • Create a backyard movie night with blankets and snacks

  • Let the kids plan a themed dinner night

  • Set up a simple water day outside with sprinklers or water balloons

  • Camp out in the backyard for the night

  • Make homemade popsicles together

  • Have a “yes day” with simple activities the kids choose

  • Create a summer bucket list as a family

  • Do an ice cream sundae bar night

  • Have a neighborhood bike ride adventure

  • Set up glow sticks and flashlight games after dark

It does not have to be anything elaborate. Sometimes the simplest moments are the ones they remember most.

Visit the Splash Pads 💦

One of the easiest (and cheapest!) ways to cool off during an Omaha summer. There are splash pads all across the metro, making them perfect for quick morning outings or afternoon playdates.

Some local favorites include:

  • Gene Leahy Mall - Downtown

  • Seymour Smith Park

  • Lake Zorinsky

  • Prairie Queen Recreation Area

  • Cimarron Splash Park

Pack towels, snacks, sunscreen, and let the kids play for hours.

Spend the Day at the Zoo 🦁

You honestly cannot beat summer days at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. Between the aquarium, desert dome, jungle exhibits, train rides, and playgrounds, it easily becomes a full-day adventure.

Pro tip: Go early in the morning before the heat hits and animals are more active.

Explore The RiverFront 🌊

Downtown Omaha’s riverfront area is packed with family fun during the summer.

Favorite things to do:

  • Climb and play at the playgrounds

  • Splash in the water features

  • Grab ice cream nearby

  • Walk the pedestrian bridge

  • Attend free summer events and concerts

Be sure to visit:

  • Gene Leahy Mall

  • Heartland of America Park

  • Lewis and Clark Landing

Visit Local Libraries 📚

Summer reading programs at local libraries are honestly underrated. Many offer:

  • Free activities

  • Crafts

  • Reading rewards

  • Story times

  • STEM events

  • Special visitors and performances

Check out:

  • Omaha Public Library

  • Papillion Public Library

It is a great way to break up long summer days while keeping kids engaged.

Have a Pool Day ☀️

Whether you spend the day at a neighborhood pool or one of Omaha’s waterparks, pool days are basically a summer requirement.

Popular family spots with fun water slides:

  • Primetime H2O Zone - Gretna Waterpark

  • Splash Station - Fremont

  • Fun-Plex Waterpark & Rides - Ralston

  • Papio Bay - Papillion

  • Mahoney State Park - Ashland

  • Pirate Cove Water Park - Council Bluffs

Lazy rivers + waterslides = guaranteed exhausted kids by bedtime!!

Take a Nature Adventure 🌿

Some days kids just need room to run and explore.

Great outdoor spots:

  • Fontenelle Forest

  • Lauritzen Gardens

  • Chalco Hills Recreation Area

Bring scooters, bikes, bug spray, and snacks for an easy outdoor adventure.

Catch a Storm Chasers Game ⚾

Nothing says summer quite like baseball, hot dogs, and fireworks.

Watching the Omaha Storm Chasers is such a fun and affordable family activity — especially on promo or fireworks nights.

Try a Summer Treat Tour 🍦

Create your own “Omaha Summer Dessert Tour” and let the kids rate each stop.

A few fun ideas:

  • Local ice cream shops

  • Donut shops

  • Snow cone stands

  • Cookie bakeries

You could even turn it into a weekly family tradition. Don't forget that National Ice Cream Day is Sunday, July 19th so check out some local ice creams shops then!

Simple Summer Moments Matter Most ❤️

At the end of the day, kids usually will not remember whether everything was Pinterest-perfect. They will remember laughing in the backyard, running through sprinklers, eating popsicles outside, and spending time together.

Omaha truly has so many fun opportunities for families during the summer months, and sometimes the best memories come from simply slowing down and enjoying where you live.

Here’s to a summer full of sunshine, simple adventures, and making memories together! ☀️
